Synopsis

In the summer of 1885, Henrik Ibsen is on holiday in Molde with his wife Suzannah and their son Sigurd. The little town on the west coast has become a turist magnet. The same summer, the Prince of Wales and the British Prime Minister Gladstone also vist the small town at the edge of the fiord. In The Mermaid’s son, we meet a fictional son of Hans Thiis Møller at Moldegård. The 16 year old has developed a deep relationship to the poet and he tells of the experiences he had together with the world famous playwright. It becomes apparent that Ibsen carries secrets and the young man is slowly drawn into a universe of betrayal, delusion and loss. The idyllic summer becomes everything other than idyllic. His own life blends with the lives of the characters. They become vrengebilder of each other. He finds himself in a hall of mirrors where situations reflect each other and reality breaks. "Havfruens sønn" was Teatret Vårt’s contribution to the Ibsen-year 2006.
